Supplier Code of Conduct
Happy Earth requires suppliers to meet or exceed these guidelines in order to remain a partner. This Code of Conduct serves to protect fair working practices and labor rights and ensure ethical business standards within our supply chain.
Employment is Freely Chosen
- There is no forced, bonded, or involuntary labor.
- Workers are not required to lodge deposits or their identity papers with their employer.
- Workers are free to leave their employer after reasonable notice.
Workers Can Collectively Bargain
- Workers have the right to join or form trade unions and bargain collectively.
- The employer adopts an open attitude towards the activities of trade unions.
- Workers' representatives are not discriminated against and have access to carry out their representative functions.
Conditions are Safe and Hygienic
- A safe and hygienic working environment is provided, and adequate steps are taken to prevent accidents and injury.
- Workers receive regular safety training.
- Access to clean toilet facilities, potable water, and sanitary facilities for food storage is provided.
- When accommodation is provided, it is clean, safe, and meets the basic needs of the workers.
No Child Labor
- No person under the legal working age is employed.
Workers are Paid Living Wages
- Wages and benefits meet, at a minimum, national legal standards or industry benchmark standards, whichever is higher.
- Wages should always be enough to meet basic needs and provide discretionary income.
- Works are notified about employment conditions with respect to wages before they enter employment.
- Deductions from wages as a disciplinary measure is not permitted.
Hours are Not Excessive
- Working hours, excluding overtime, do not exceed 48 hours per week.
- All overtime is voluntary and used responsibly.
- Total hours worked in any 7-day period do not exceed 60 hours.
- Workers are provided at minimum one day off per 7 days, or where allowed by national law, 2 days off in every 14-day period.
No Discrimination
- There is no discrimination in hiring, compensation, access to training, promotion, termination, or retirement based on race, caste, nationality, religion, age, disability, gender, marital status, sexual orientation, union membership, or political affiliation.
Regular Employment
- Work performed must be on the basis of recognized employment relationship established through national law and practice.
- Obligations to employees under labor or social security laws are not avoided through the use of labor-only contracting or home-working arrangements.
- Suppliers have full understanding of the entire recruitment process and assess all labor recruiters against legal and/or ethical requirements.
- There are effective management systems in place to identify, monitor, and control the hiring and management of all migrant workers, contract workers, agency workers, temporary, or casual labor.
- Workers pay no recruitment fee at any stage of the process.
- Worker contracts accurately reflect the agreed payment and terms in the recruitment process and are understood and signed by workers.
Hard or Inhuman Treatment is Not Allowed
- Physical abuse or discipline, threat of physical abuse, sexual or other harassment and verbal abuse or other forms of intimidation are prohibited.
- Companies provide access to a confidential grievance mechanism for all workers.
Environmental Protection
- Businesses must meet the requirements of local and national laws related to environmental standards.
- Businesses are aware of their end client's environmental standards/code requirements.
- Suppliers should have an environmental policy covering their environmental impact, which is communicated to all appropriate parties, including its own suppliers.
- Suppliers should measure and be aware of the environmental impact of their site and processes, including energy use and water use.
- Businesses should make continuous improvements in their environmental performance.
- Businesses should have available for review any environmental certifications or any environmental management systems documentation.
